In God's Armor, Track 14. A devotional on Psalm 91.
The Scripture
"He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty." (Psalm 91:1, KJV)
"I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust." (Psalm 91:2, KJV)
"For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways." (Psalm 91:11, KJV)
The Heart of It
After so many songs of battle, the album comes here to rest. Psalm 91 is the soldier's psalm, but it is not sung on the battlefield; it is sung in the shelter. He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. Before there is any promise of protection, there is a place - a secret place, a dwelling. The protection of God belongs to those who live near Him, not those who only visit in emergencies.
The psalmist piles up the images because no single one is enough. Refuge, fortress, shadow, wings. A refuge is where you run when danger comes. A fortress is where you live so that danger cannot reach you at all. A shadow means He is that close - you cannot stand in someone's shadow from far away. And wings are the tenderest picture of all: not a wall but a covering, the warmth of a protector who gathers His own the way a bird gathers her young. He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust.
The psalm does not promise a world without terror. It names the terrors honestly - the terror by night, the arrow by day, the thousand falling at thy side, ten thousand at thy right hand. Faith is not pretending the arrows do not fly. Faith is knowing where you dwell while they fly. Yet I will trust and not be moved, the song says, because the promise is forever proved.
And then the psalm opens the door on something we rarely see: for he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. The servant of God is watched over by servants of God we cannot see. They bear thee up in their hands. This album began by declaring that the battle is unseen; this psalm answers that the protection is unseen too, and it is greater. His angels are watching, our going out, our coming in, our sleep.
So this song is an invitation more than an anthem: come and dwell. Not to visit the secret place, but to live there - to make the most High your habitation, and to find that in the shadow of God, the fearful heart is finally free.
More Witnesses: Latter-day Scripture
The Restoration scriptures carry the very same promise of angels and nearness. The Lord speaks it to His servants in words that read like Psalm 91 renewed: "I will go before your face. I will be on your right hand and on your left, and my Spirit shall be in your hearts, and mine angels round about you, to bear you up" (Doctrine and Covenants 84:88). Before, behind, beside, within, and round about - the covering is complete.
And Nephi, in his hour of grief and weakness, reached for the same shelter the psalmist knew: "O Lord, wilt thou encircle me around in the robe of thy righteousness!" (2 Nephi 4:33). The refuge is not a place on a map; it is the Lord Himself, wrapped around the trusting soul like a robe, like a shadow, like wings.
How the Song Carries It
The verses settle into the psalm's own quietness, spoken over the harp: "I dwell within the secret place, beneath the shadow of His wing. No terror of the night shall come, no arrow that the day would bring." Even the second verse, with ten thousand falling on every side, refuses to hurry: "yet I will trust and not be moved."
The chorus is sung like an evening hymn: "the Lord is my refuge and fortress, His angels are watching over me. No evil shall come to my dwelling, in the shadow of God I am free." The bridge lingers on the angels' charge - "my going out, my coming in, my sleep... they bear me up on every way" - and the song closes with the softest confession on the album: "He is my refuge. His angels watch over me." It is meant to be the song you fall asleep to, with the armor by the bed and the watch kept by Another.
The Lyrics
He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.
I dwell within the secret place,
Beneath the shadow of His wing.
No terror of the night shall come,
No arrow that the day would bring.
He is my refuge and my tower,
I rest beneath His sheltering power.
The Lord is my refuge and fortress,
His angels are watching over me.
No evil shall come to my dwelling,
In the shadow of God I am free.
Ten thousand fall on every side,
Yet I will trust and not be moved.
He covers me with faithful wings,
His promise is forever proved.
He gives His angels charge to keep
My going out, my coming in, my sleep.
They bear me up on every way,
And guard my steps by night and day.
He is my refuge.
His angels watch over me.
A Blessing
Tonight, when the lights go out and the worries line up, remember where you live. You dwell in the secret place of the most High; you abide under the shadow of the Almighty. His angels have their charge, and they do not sleep. Rest, then - not because the world is safe, but because your God is. He is your refuge and your fortress. Go in peace.
