Sandals of the Gospel of Peace

In God's Armor, Track 5. A devotional on Ephesians 6:15.

The Scripture

"And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace." (Ephesians 6:15, KJV)

"How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace." (Isaiah 52:7, KJV)

The Heart of It

Every other piece of the armor faces the enemy. This one faces the road. Paul does not shoe our feet for retreat, and he does not shoe them for attack. He shoes them with peace, and with readiness - the preparation of the gospel of peace. The soldier's sandals were studded to grip the ground so he would not slip in the clash, and to carry him wherever he was sent. Our footing is peace, and our errand is good news.

There is a quiet surprise in this. The armor is for spiritual warfare, yet at the feet Paul plants peace. It tells us what kind of war this is. We do not advance by force of personality or sharpness of argument. We advance by carrying the gospel of peace into places that have only known fear. The believer's progress through the world is not a march of conquest. It is a delivery of good news.

That is why Isaiah calls the messenger's feet beautiful. Not beautiful in themselves - feet rarely are - but beautiful because of what they carry and where they are willing to go. Over the mountains, into the hard places, to the weary face that has waited a long time for a kind word, the messenger comes with peace. Heaven counts those tired, dusty feet among the loveliest things on earth.

And the peace we carry is first the peace we stand in. We cannot give what we do not have. Before our feet bring good tidings to anyone else, they are bound with His peace, the peace that guards the heart and mind, the peace the world cannot give and cannot take. Rooted there, we are ready. Wherever He sends us, we go not anxious but at rest, carrying light where the shadows have lain.

So the sandals are an invitation as much as a defense. Stand firm in His peace - and then go. Someone down the road is waiting for the good news your feet are carrying.

More Witnesses: Latter-day Scripture

The Restoration scriptures echo Isaiah's praise of the messenger. Abinadi, facing death, quotes the very words: "And these are they who have published peace, who have brought good tidings of good... O how beautiful upon the mountains were their feet!" (Mosiah 15:14, 16). The feet that carry the gospel of peace are beautiful in every age.

The Lord calls His servants to that same readiness: "And ye are called to bring to pass the gathering of mine elect... wherefore, gird up your loins and be prepared" (Doctrine and Covenants 29:7-9, paraphrased theme of preparation). And He frames the whole errand as one of peace and good tidings: "Lift up your voices unto this people; speak the thoughts that I shall put into your hearts" (Doctrine and Covenants 100:5) - sent ones, carrying His peace.

And the promise that steadies the feet is His own gift of peace: "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you" (John 14:27), the peace the Book of Mormon calls the gift that lets a people "have no contention... but they were in one, the children of Christ" (4 Nephi 1:15-17). We stand in that peace, and then we carry it.

How the Song Carries It

The song moves like a journey, but gently. The verses are quiet and sure - "my feet are bound with holy peace, made ready for the road ahead" - the unhurried confidence of someone who knows the road and knows the One who sends them.

The chorus opens the horizon: "Shod with the gospel, I walk in His peace, carrying light where the shadows have lain. Over the mountains the good news I bring, bringing the Lord's own children home again." That last line carries the heart of this ministry. The slow tempo keeps it from becoming a marching song; it stays a pilgrim's song, peaceful and purposeful, all the way to the soft "bringing them home" at the end.

The Lyrics

And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace.
How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that publisheth peace.

My feet are bound with holy peace,
Made ready for the road ahead.
Wherever He would have me walk,
By living water I am led.

I will not fear the rocky way,
His peace will guard my steps today.

Shod with the gospel, I walk in His peace,
Carrying light where the shadows have lain.
Over the mountains the good news I bring,
Bringing the Lord's own children home again.

Not with a sword, but with good news,
I come in gentleness and grace.
The gospel of His perfect peace
Will shine upon the weary face.

Beautiful, beautiful, the feet that bring
Peace from the heart of the Saviour King.
Step after step on the narrow way,
Walking in peace to the break of day.

I walk in His peace.
Bringing them home.

A Blessing

May your feet be bound with His peace before they ever carry it. And wherever the road bends today, may someone be glad you came, because you brought good news. Walk in peace, and bring them home.
