In God's Armor, Track 8. A devotional on Ephesians 6:17.
The Scripture
"And take... the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God." (Ephesians 6:17, KJV)
"For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit." (Hebrews 4:12, KJV)
The Heart of It
Every other piece of the armor is for defense. This one is the only weapon, and even it is not ours to swing in our own strength. Paul calls it the sword of the Spirit, and then tells us exactly what it is: the word of God. Our one offensive weapon in the unseen war is not cleverness, not willpower, not the force of our own conviction. It is what God has said.
We learn how to use it from the Lord Himself. In the wilderness, when the tempter came with twisted words, Jesus did not argue, negotiate, or rely on His own authority. Three times He answered with four words: "It is written." He met every lie with Scripture, and the tempter left. If the Son of God reached for the written word in the hour of temptation, how much more do we need it ready in ours.
That is why the word is called living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword. It is not a quiet book of advice. It cuts. It divides truth from lie, motive from excuse, the voice of God from the voice of the enemy. It pierces to the places we hide and frees what was bound there. The same word that created the worlds is the word placed in our hands to wield.
But a sword left in its sheath defends no one. The word does its work when it is known, believed, and spoken - when "it is written" rises in us faster than the lie can finish. This is why we hide Scripture in our hearts before the day of battle, not during it. The sword we have not learned to draw will not help us when the darts are already flying.
So we take up the word as both shield-breaker and surgeon. We answer temptation with what God has said. We let it cut where it needs to cut and heal where it needs to heal. And we pray the prayer the song prays: speak through me, work through me, let all I do honor You. The weapon is His word; the victory is His.
More Witnesses: Latter-day Scripture
The Restoration scriptures press the power of the word as the weapon that overcomes. Alma testifies of its effect: "The preaching of the word had a great tendency to lead the people to do that which was just - yea, it had had more powerful effect upon the minds of the people than the sword, or anything else" (Alma 31:5). More powerful than the sword - that is the sword of the Spirit.
Nephi shows us how to wield it, feasting and holding fast: "Feast upon the words of Christ; for behold, the words of Christ will tell you all things what ye should do" (2 Nephi 32:3). The word is not only a weapon against the enemy; it is the voice that guides every step.
And the Lord puts that very word in His servants' mouths as their weapon: "You shall declare the things which have been revealed to my servant... and now, behold, this is the sword" of the Spirit at work as "the word of God... which is sharp, more powerful than a two-edged sword" (Doctrine and Covenants 6:2; Helaman 3:29, Book of Mormon). Laid hold of, the word leads the souls of men to the kingdom of God.
How the Song Carries It
The verses put the sword in hand: "I take in hand the living Word, the blade that pierces every lie. It cuts the chains, it frees the soul, it lifts the fallen heart on high." This is the word as both weapon and rescue, cutting and freeing in the same stroke.
The second verse takes us into the wilderness with Christ: "when tempter comes with twisted words, I answer, it is written, stand." The chorus lifts the blade: "I lift the sword of the Spirit high, the living word, forever true." Slow and resolute, the song never sounds like aggression; it sounds like authority received. By the bridge - "speak, O Spirit, speak through me" - the weapon has become a prayer, and the listener is invited to let the word do its work in them.
The Lyrics
And take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword.
I take in hand the living Word,
The blade that pierces every lie.
It cuts the chains, it frees the soul,
It lifts the fallen heart on high.
His word is power, His word is true,
It makes the broken spirit new.
I lift the sword of the Spirit high,
The living word, forever true.
Sharper than any blade of man,
It makes the weary spirit new.
When tempter comes with twisted words,
I answer, it is written, stand.
The truth of God will put to flight
The schemes of every dark command.
Speak, O Spirit, speak through me,
Word of the Lord, set the captive free.
Sharper than fire, brighter than day,
The sword of the Spirit will light my way.
It is written.
The word of the Lord.
A Blessing
When the twisted words come for you, may "it is written" rise faster than the lie can finish. Take up the living Word, let it cut and let it heal, and let the Spirit speak through you. Go in peace.
