Watch and Pray

In God's Armor, Track 9. A devotional on Ephesians 6:18.

The Scripture

"Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints." (Ephesians 6:18, KJV)

"Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak." (Matthew 26:41, KJV)

The Heart of It

After Paul names every piece of the armor, he adds one more line, and it is easy to read past it. We have the belt, the breastplate, the sandals, the shield, the helmet, the sword - and then: praying always. Prayer is not a footnote to the armor. It is how the armor stays on. Without it, the pieces are just gear we admire and never wear. Prayer is the breath that animates the whole.

Notice the two verbs paired together: watch and pray. Prayer keeps us close to God; watching keeps us awake to the battle. One without the other goes lame. Prayer without watchfulness drifts into routine; watchfulness without prayer hardens into anxiety. Together they make a soldier who is both alert and at rest - eyes open to the real danger, heart anchored to the only refuge.

Jesus gave this command in the garden, on the hardest night of His life, to disciples who could not keep their eyes open. He was not scolding them so much as warning them: the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak. We do not pray because we are strong enough to stay awake. We pray because we are not. The watchman on the wall does not trust his own alertness; he calls upon the Lord by name, again and again, through the long hours before the dawn.

And Paul says to pray always - not only in crisis, but morning by morning and evening by evening, a steady rhythm rather than an emergency call. The faithful heart pours itself out and keeps on believing, because it is praying to a God who never sleeps and never departs. Our prayers may grow weary; His attention never does. He hears the cry of the faithful heart every time.

So we keep the armor on by keeping the line open. We watch, because the battle is real. We pray, because the victory is His. And we do it always - not to twist God's arm, but to stay near the One whose presence is the whole point of the fight.

More Witnesses: Latter-day Scripture

The Restoration scriptures call us to that same constant, watchful prayer. The risen Lord commands it directly: "Ye must watch and pray always, lest ye be tempted by the devil, and ye be led away captive by him" (3 Nephi 18:15). Watch and pray always - the very pairing the song is built on.

Amulek widens prayer to cover all of life: "Cry unto him in your fields, yea, over all your flocks. Cry unto him in your houses... Yea, and when you do not cry unto the Lord, let your hearts be full, drawn out in prayer unto him continually for your welfare, and also for the welfare of those who are around you" (Alma 34:20, 27). Hearts drawn out continually - that is praying always.

And the Lord promises the watchful, praying heart His nearness: "Pray always, and I will pour out my Spirit upon you, and great shall be your blessing" (Doctrine and Covenants 19:38). The God who commands the watch is the God who keeps it with us.

How the Song Carries It

The verses begin in the quiet hours, where prayer actually lives: "before the dawn I seek His face, in quiet hours I bow and wait. I bring my burdens to the Lord, and lay them down at mercy's gate." It is unhurried and honest, the sound of someone keeping the watch.

The chorus turns it into a steady rhythm: "watch and pray through the night and day, lift up your heart to the throne of grace. Pray in the Spirit, never cease, and seek the Lord, and seek His face." The slow setting keeps it from sounding like a duty; it sounds like devotion. By the bridge - "morning by morning, evening by evening... He never sleeps, He never departs" - the song has become the very rhythm it commends, carrying the listener gently toward the One who always hears.

The Lyrics

Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints.
Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation.

Before the dawn I seek His face,
In quiet hours I bow and wait.
I bring my burdens to the Lord,
And lay them down at mercy's gate.

So I will watch, and I will pray,
And keep my armor on each day.

Watch and pray through the night and day,
Lift up your heart to the throne of grace.
Pray in the Spirit, never cease,
And seek the Lord, and seek His face.

The watchman waits upon the wall,
He calls upon the Lord by name.
For prayer will hold the armor fast,
And keep the heart from fear and shame.

Morning by morning, evening by evening,
Pour out your soul, keep on believing.
He hears the cry of the faithful heart,
He never sleeps, He never departs.

I watch and I pray.
He hears my prayer.

A Blessing

You do not have to keep your own watch by your own strength. Keep the line open. Watch, because the battle is real; pray, because the victory is His. And know that the God who never sleeps has already heard you. Go in peace.
