The Scripture

The Heart of It
If the first track wakes us with a trumpet, the second bends low and speaks the truest word a weary soul can hear. Having been called by name, we now learn whose name we bear. This song rests in the settled assurance of belonging, the quiet certainty that we did not begin at our birth and we are not defined by the world's verdict over us. We are children of the living God, loved before our first breath.
The heart of this song is a love that comes before us. John invites us to "behold," to stop and marvel, at the manner of love the Father has bestowed. It is not a love we negotiated. It is not a wage. It is a gift already given, a name already spoken over us. And Paul tells us that this is not wishful thinking but a witness, the Spirit itself confirming to our own spirit that we are indeed His children.
This is why the world's opinion of us can never be the final word. John is honest that "the world knoweth us not," and he tells us why. It did not know Him either. The same world that failed to recognize the Son will often fail to recognize the children. That is not a reason to doubt our belonging; it is confirmation of it. Our worth was never issued by the world, so the world cannot revoke it.
And this belonging reaches back further than we can remember. To Jeremiah the Lord said, "Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee." We were known before we were formed. Paul writes to the Galatians in the same spirit, that "God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father," so that we are "no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ" (Galatians 4:6-7). When we grasp that our identity is anchored before our birth and secured by the Spirit within, the ground stops shifting beneath us. We are not auditioning to become children. We are children, being gently reminded to come home.
More Witnesses: Latter-day Scripture
Later scripture sings this same note of belonging. In the Book of Mormon, King Benjamin teaches that through covenant with Christ His people become His children, spiritually begotten of Him and called by His name, taken into His family by grace (Mosiah 5:7). Sonship is not something we manufacture; it is something the Savior gives.
The Doctrine and Covenants roots that gift in Christ Himself. In the great vision of the Son, it declares that it is by Him, and through Him, that the inhabitants of the worlds are begotten sons and daughters unto God (Doctrine and Covenants 76:24). From the apostles to the prophets to these latter witnesses, the chorus holds. You were known, you were loved, and you were named a child of God.
How the Song Carries It
The song carries this truth by reaching back before time and forward toward home. The first verse sets the scene "before the mountains, before the morning, before your name was ever known," and there, already, the One who "set the stars in heaven" had claimed you. The pre-chorus meets us honestly, "when the world has told you otherwise," and answers with the plain command to "remember what is true." Then the chorus becomes a lullaby of belonging: "You are a child of God, loved before your first breath."
The second verse names that ache in every heart, "a country you have longed for, a light you knew and half forgot," and calls it "the Father's house." The bridge is the whole song distilled into an act of faith, telling us to "say it soft and say it certain, let it settle in your bones." Over and over, "He knows your name." That repetition is not filler. It is how a truth moves from the ear to the heart, and how the awakening becomes rest.
